Thank you to all of the grade 5/6 families for your contributions to the Christmas Cheer board Hamper! It’s much appreciated.

Our class Christmas party will be held in the afternoon on Friday. Only those families I’ve already contacted are asked to bring food for the party. A big thank you in advance to you!

If you have any questions about anything happening in the next couple of days, please let me know.

Merry Christmas to all of you! I hope you get some time off to celebrate with your family and friends, and to relax as well.

The Christmas Concert was awesome! All of the students did a great job performing.

Just a friendly reminder that Christmas Hamper items are due Wednesday, December 18th. Thank you so much for contributing to the hamper and for helping to make someone else’s Christmas better.

Please remember that students will be participating in winter activities December 18th, so please remind them to dress warm.

The grade 5/6 students are enjoying playing a game that teaches them how to look up Bible verses.

The Grade 5’s are multiplying with multiples of 10.

Grade 6’s are learning about and naming angles.
Here students are displaying obtuse, right and straight angles.

The class is learning about Louis Riel, the Métis people and the Red River Resistance. They seemed to enjoy learning about the part Riel played in defending Métis land.

Reminder:
The Christmas Concert will be held Thursday, December 12th at 6:30 pm at the Caboto Centre. Students are asked to be there at 6:00 dressed in their Christmas attire. Please remember to bring costumes, if necessary, and music & instruments.

The grade 5’s are using halving and doubling to multiply and divide. It is a strategy that helps with mental math skills.
The grade 6’s are dividing with decimals using both long and short division, and are getting quite good at it.
The whole class is continuing to practice their cursive writing every morning while they get settled in for the day. This might be the most quiet part of the day, where you might be able to hear a pin drop.

This week we practiced our spelling words with a racing game. Some of us had a difficult time staying behind the start line before the word ‘go’ was said. We had lots of laughs while learning.

Thank you to Mrs. Culley for bringing Christmas treats and warm drinks for our school patrols this morning! They felt very appreciated and got us all in the Christmas mood.

The grade 5’s are working on their multiplication skills and are getting so much better recalling their facts!

The grade 5/6 students read about how Jesus was tempted by the devil in Matthew 4:1. They are writing an interview with Jesus about his experience and his strength to overcome the devil.

Students have the opportunity to earn coupons to Boston Pizza. When students write a book report on a book they’ve read and hand it in at the end of the month, they will receive a coupon for a free meal.

Thank you to all of the parents of the grade 5/6 students for coming out to see your child’s work from first term. It was nice to see everyone!

The Grade 6 students are playing Division Fish. They’re using their multiplication skills to help them with division.

We are currently learning about the creation of Manitoba in 1870. The Grade 5&6 students are learning about some of the people who were part of that process, and researching their lives.

In Math class, the Grade 5’s are learning how to write equations using variables. For example: 5w=45

The Grade 6 students are learning how to estimate the sum, difference, product and quotient of numbers with decimals.

The Grade 5/6 class sang “I Will Remember You” at the Remembrance Day ceremony. They sounded fantastic!

The Grade 5 & 6’s have been learning about Canadian politics related to the federal election. Students were able to research and present information on a particular party, and to take place in the student vote process.

The class is doing a novel study on the novel “Because of Winn-Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo. The story is about a young girl who struggles with her feelings and the relationships she has.

We have been discussing compassion in Religion class. We have read Bible stories that teach about compassion, and students have created skits reflecting on what they’ve learned.

Reminders:
Movie Night is this Thursday evening in the school gym.
The Terry Fox walk is at 1:00 on October 29th. Students have been asked to do chores to earn a bit of money to donate to the Cancer Society. They also have the option of bringing in a loonie for the same cause, and can wear a hat that day if they do.
On October 31st, we will be having a class party in the afternoon. Students can dress up if they wish, but are asked to dress in a child friendly way (no masks, blood or weapons please). The school will be collecting non- perishable food items that day as well, to donate to those in need.

Welcome back everyone!
I hope you’re all getting used to being back at school again. We have done some fun ice breaker activities and talked about expectations for the year. We have been reviewing PAX (peace, productivity, health and happiness) which helps develop a responsible and respectful classroom atmosphere. We have been discussing what we want our class to look and feel like this year, and how we can be good PAX leaders.
A few notes have gone home already explaining a few things. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at jwhitney@bsls.ca.
